Multi-millionaire Simon Keswick resigns from Cheltenham Town board
Tuesday, January 15, 2008, 08:00 - thisisbristol.co.uk
Multi-millionaire businessman Simon Keswick has resigned from the Cheltenham Town board.
The Daily Press understands that Keswick tendered his resignation at the weekend due to unease at what he sees as media intrusion following his inclusion on the football rich list last week.
Simon Keswick, 66, was ranked at Number 12 with an estimated fortune of £966m and has been an active financial backer at Cheltenham since arriving in the boardroom four years ago.
Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker last night confirmed Keswick has left with immediate effect due to 'business and personal' reasons.
He said: "Simon has made a significant investment in the club which has helped it to achieve promotion to League One and to retain that status in subsequent seasons.

"He has also helped with the investment to build the fantastic new 'Carlsberg Stand' at the Whaddon Road end of the stadium. He will be sorely missed but will remain a good friend of the club and we hope a frequent guest in the Directors' box."
Simon Keswick has, however, left the door open for a return when he calls time on his business career, by saying: "I have really enjoyed my tenure at the club and perhaps when I finally retire I might put myself up for election again.
"Unfortunately, due to my heavy business commitments, I have been unable to attend as many matches and meetings as I would like. I shall continue to monitor the club's progress with interest and hope to come along when I can."
Meanwhile, Cheltenham manager Martin Allen yesterday completed his third loan signing of the January transfer window after agreeing a month-long deal for Reading youngster Nicholas Bignall.
Bignall, 18, can play either wide or as a striker and scored one goal in a five-game loan spell with Northampton Town earlier this season.
Allen is also hoping to clinch the signing of an experienced league campaigner before his side travel to Colchester on Saturday.
Allen will not be pursuing his interest in French triallists Dino Djiba and Mohamed Sadio, who both featured in yesterday's reserve game with Swindon Town.
The match ended 1-1 with an own goal by Swindon defender Tom Evans cancelling out Michael Pook's first-half opener.
Cheltenham defender Shane Duff completed 45 minutes on his return from an Achilles injury and is hoping to be fit enough to play some part in the FA Cup third round replay at Doncaster next Tuesday night.

Cheltenham Town have been rocked by the resignation of their wealthiest director Simon Keswick.
Publicity-shy Simon Keswick's departure is a devastating blow to the cash-strapped Robins, who are set to report a six-figure loss at the end of the financial year.
Keswick has been a regular among the front runners in FourFourTwo magazine's annual Football Richlist with an estimated wealth of £966 million and was placed at 12th in this year's standings.
Many fans have questioned why the long-standing Robins fan has not poured vast sums of money into the club, but in fact he has been a major financial contributor throughout his four years on the board.
The former chairman of Kwik Save Group, 66-year-old Simon Keswick cited his many business commitments as his reason for quitting.

He will remain an avid follower of the Robins and would consider rejoining the club in the future.
Keswick said: "I have really enjoyed my tenure at the club and perhaps when I finally retire I might put myself up for election again.
"Unfortunately due to my heavy business commitments and time spent out of the country I have been unable to attend as many matches and meetings as I would like but I very much hope to come along when I can."
Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker, who has regularly offset club debts along with Keswick in recent years, said Cheltenham now faced one of their toughest challenges.
"Next season the board are going to have to be very astute and prudent in considering our playing budget, but we will continue to do everything we can to stay in League One" he said.
"The budget will have to be lower and it will be the toughest challenge we have been engaged in for quite a while.
"Losing Simon Keswick is a blow, but we are still viable and few clubs make a profit."
Baker paid tribute to the influence of Keswick, who played a big part in funding the construction of the Carlsberg Stand, built during the 2005-06 season at the Whaddon Road end of the ground.
Baker said: "Simon has made a significant investment in the club which has helped it to achieve promotion to Football League One, and to retain that status. He will be sorely missed."
Keswick's departure places even more importance on next week's FA Cup replay at Doncaster Rovers, with a money-spinning home tie against Aston Villa the prize for the victors.
